Newsletter and email signup
When you sign up for our email newsletter through a form on this site, we collect the email address you provide, and your name if you enter one. We use it to send you the education series you signed up for and related emails from AFT Dispatch. We send these only because you opted in, and consent is the legal basis we rely on.
- Our email is handled by our email service provider, currently Inbox, which stores your address and delivers messages on our behalf.
- We may use an email verification service to confirm addresses are valid and reduce bounces.
- Every email includes an unsubscribe link and our physical postal address. When you unsubscribe we stop sending, and we remove or suppress your address.
We do not sell your email address or share it with anyone for their own marketing.
Comments
When visitors leave comments we collect the data shown in the comments form, along with the visitor’s IP address and browser user-agent string, which help with spam detection.
An anonymized string created from your email address may be provided to the Gravatar service to check whether you use it. The Gravatar privacy policy is at automattic.com/privacy. After your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible to the public alongside your comment.
Media
If you upload images to the website, avoid uploading images with embedded location data, because visitors can download and extract that data from images on the site.
Cookies
If you leave a comment you may opt in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies, so you do not have to re-enter them next time. These last one year.
If you have an account and log in, we set a temporary cookie to check whether your browser accepts cookies. It holds no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser. On login we set cookies to save your login and display choices. Login cookies last two days, screen-option cookies a year, and Remember Me extends login to two weeks. Logging out removes the login cookies. Editing or publishing an article saves an additional cookie noting the post ID, which expires after one day.
Analytics and embedded content may set their own cookies, described below.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors use the site, for example which pages are read and how people arrive. This may set cookies and process information such as your IP address, device, and pages viewed, including campaign tags on links we share. Some visitors arrive from links inside our mobile app, and those links carry campaign tags identifying the app as the source. They do not identify you.
Our legal basis is legitimate interest in understanding and improving our content. You can learn about Google’s practices and opt out through Google’s tools at policies.google.com/privacy and tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles may include embedded content, for example YouTube videos. Embedded content from other websites behaves as if you had visited that website directly. Those sites may collect data about you, set cookies, embed third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that content, including if you are logged in to that website. YouTube is provided by Google. See policies.google.com/privacy.
Who we share your data with
We do not sell your personal data. We share limited data only with the service providers that operate this site and its features, and only so they can perform those functions:
- InMotion Hosting, our web host, which stores the site and its database.
- Our email service provider, currently Inbox, which stores your address and sends the newsletter.
- An email verification service, used from time to time to confirm address validity.
- Google, for site analytics and embedded YouTube content.
- Cloudflare, our content delivery and security provider, which processes requests to the site and may see your IP address in order to deliver and protect it.
- An automated spam-detection service, to check comments.
- Gravatar, as described above.
Where your data is sent
We are based in the United States, and our service providers store and process data in the United States. If you access this site or subscribe from outside the United States, including from the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, your information is transferred to and processed in the United States.
Where our providers transfer personal data out of the EEA or UK, they rely on the safeguards available to them, such as standard contractual clauses. Each provider’s own privacy policy describes the safeguards it uses.
How long we keep your data
- Comments and their metadata are retained indefinitely so we can recognize and approve follow-up comments automatically.
- Newsletter email addresses are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove them.
- Analytics data is retained for 14 months, per our Google Analytics retention setting.
- Registered-user profile information is kept while the account exists.
Your rights over your data
If you have an account or have left comments, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, or ask us to erase it. This excludes data we must keep for administrative, legal, or security reasons.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights to access, correct, delete, or obtain a copy of your personal data, and to object to or restrict certain processing. We do not sell personal data, and we do not use it for targeted advertising.
Newsletter subscribers can unsubscribe at any time from any email. To make any other request, email [email protected]. We do not charge for this and we will not treat you differently for asking.
Children’s privacy
This site is intended for adults working in the trucking industry. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, email us and we will delete it.
Automated decision-making
We do not use your personal data for automated decision-making or profiling.
How we protect your data
The site is served over an encrypted HTTPS connection, and traffic passes through our security and content-delivery provider. Access to site administration is limited to authorized administrators.
If there is a data breach
If we become aware of a breach affecting your personal data, we will investigate, take steps to contain it, and notify affected individuals and any required authorities where the law requires notice, within the timeframes the law sets.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will update the last updated date above and post the new version here.
We may change the service providers listed above from time to time, for example moving to a different email provider. If we do, your information is transferred to the new provider for the same purpose, and we update this policy to name them.
